The 10,000 Steps Program is a free and evidence-based initiative by CQUniversity, encouraging Australians to move more each day since 2001. Whether you're just starting out, walking on your own, or stepping up with friends, family, or colleagues, the program offers tools, challenges, and resources to help you stay motivated and reach your goals.

Funded by Health and Wellbeing Queensland and Preventive Health SA, 10,000 Steps encourages incorporating movement into daily lives by finding more ways to move, tracking steps, setting goals and monitoring progress.

Why Track Steps?

Research has shown that people who track their steps are more likely to have higher physical activity levels. Tracking steps helps you become aware of how much you are moving every day and recording your steps can be a powerful motivator.

So, put on your tracker and see how many steps you take. Start by adding 500 - 1,000 steps to your day. Find something you enjoy, that fits in with what you’re doing, saves you time, or is satisfying to make physical activity become part of your everyday. And remember, whether you do your activity all at once or in short bursts, every step and minute of activity counts!

Challenges and Tournaments

10,000 Steps offers a variety of Tournaments tailored to different group sizes and timeframes, allowing individuals, community groups and organisations to choose a variety of challenge types that best fit their needs and goals.

10,000 Steps Monthly Challenges
Monthly Challenges are free to join and run from the first to the last day of each month. Participants choose from four step goals, track progress individually, and can join a Leaderboard for rankings and a chance to win a prize by completing their journey.

10,000 Steps Groups and Group Challenges
10,000 Steps Groups allow up to 20 members to track and share their step progress together. Group Leaders can set monthly goals, making it a simple way to stay motivated and connected.

10,000 Steps Race and Timeout Tournaments
10,000 Steps Tournaments offer two fun ways for teams to stay active—Race Tournaments follow a virtual journey, while Timeout Tournaments focus on step totals over a set time. Both options are flexible, customisable, and great for boosting motivation in any group.
