Strategy: Walkway Signage and Resources to promote physical activity
Apunipima Cape York Health Council was one of 12 10,000 Steps Community Grant recipients awarded funding for the implementation of 10,000 Steps Community Strategies in 2018. Apunipima knows the importance of promoting physical activity to help reduce the incidence and impact of chronic conditions.
Background
Apunipima Cape York Health Council is the largest community controlled health organisation in Queensland and delivers a comprehensive primary health care service to 11 Cape York communities. Apunipima adheres to a family centred model of comprehensive primary health care which sees clients as people embedded in families and communities.
Implementation
- Two community discussions both recommended:
- Walking was a popular choice of exercise
- To use the most durable of materials to protect against vandalism
- Walkway signage aligned well with the Apunipima's chronic conditions strategy.
- 29 street blades, 16 directional signs and 2 maps were installed along 4 walking routes.
Outcomes
- The signage is very prominent in the community and has increased awareness of physical activity.
- Community members acknowledged the importance of being physically active in order to maintain good health.
