2018 Community Grant: Charters Towers Regional Council

Strategy: Walkway Signage

Charters Towers Regional Council was one of 12 10,000 Steps Community Grant recipients awarded funding for the implementation of 10,000 Steps Community Strategies in 2018. Charters Towers Regional Council aims to encourage physical activity for the community as a whole, in conjunction with raising awareness within the community of the available walking trails in the town area.

Background

Charters Towers Regional Council is a local government who wants to encourage physical activity for the community as a whole. Previously awarded a 10,000 Steps Community Grant in 2017 for a Community Tournament, this round Charters Towers Regional Council wanted to highlight their walking trails.

Implementation

  • A total of 10 blade signs and 5 square markers installed along 3 walkways in the region: a sporting field, a popular walking hill and within the town centre.
  • A walkway trail brochure has been updated and distributed on the Council and Tourism websites, and printed in hard copy for the Council offices and the Visitor Information Centre.

Outcomes

  • The Walkway Signage will be incorporated into Council's annual health and wellbeing event, Towers Rush.
  • This signage will be used by many locals and tourists.
“Many conversations have been generated amongst walkers, as they were not aware of the amount of steps they were walking. Many have increased their walking distance in order to increase their daily step target of 10,000 Steps.”
