Strategy: Walkway Signage
Mackay Regional Council was one of 12 10,000 Steps Community Grant recipients awarded funding for the implementation of 10,000 Steps Community Strategies in 2018. Mackay Regional Council sought this grant as an opportunity to collaborate with 10,000 Steps to replace and update existing signage.
Background
Mackay Regional Council is a local government who provides a range of services including parks, playgrounds, libraries, galleries and sporting and aquatic facilities. The main objective of the updated walkway signage was to raise the awareness of the walkability of our Central Business District and its connectivity and integration of the signature Bluewater Trail.
Implementation
- 46 directional blade signs were installed at 19 different locations that included: distance and steps to key locations.
- New maps and promotional materials were updated.
- A media release was distributed to acknowledge the new signs and encourage and promote physical activity within the community.
Outcomes
- The new signage, trails and maps will be highlighted in the 'Try the 5' initiative, where free activities such as cycling, adrenaline sports, water sports, fitness, walking and running will be promoted to the community.
- Mackay Regional Council plans on following up with a Community Tournament to further encourage physical activity in the region through winter.
