2018 Community Grant: Mackay Hospital and Health Service - Steps for Schools

Strategy: Community Tournament

The Mackay Hospital and Health Service was one of 12 10,000 Steps Community Grant recipients awarded funding for the implementation of 10,000 Steps Community Strategies in 2018.

Background

The Mackay Hospital and Health Service region covers a large area from Sarina in the south to Moranbah in the Southwest and up to Collinsville and Bowen in the North and then all down the east coast.

Community Grant Case Studies -  Mackay HHS Schools  - Blat

Implementation

  • Aluminium signs were developed and provided to each state school in the area, linking all of the schools.
  • A Steps for Schools Time Out Tournament was run over a 2 week period for staff, students and parents - some were provided with pedometers.

Outcomes

  • Eight schools participated from the area.
  • The Steps for Schools Tournament had 24 teams with 228 participants.

“Teachers were seen checking their pedometers as they walked around the school. They encouraged each other to improve their efforts and the challenge became an excuse to talk to each other.”
