2018 Community Grant: Queensland Country Women's Association

Strategy: Dog Walking and Community Tournament

Queensland Country Women's Association (QCWA) was one of 12 10,000 Steps Community Grant recipients awarded funding for the implementation of 10,000 Steps Community Strategies in 2018. Their aim was to build the health and cohesiveness of their community of Beechmont.

Background

The Queensland Country Women's Association is the largest and most widespread women's organisation in Queensland. Their vision is simple: for the women of Queensland to come together to support communities, while celebrating their interests and forging friendships in a respectful and caring environment. This is achieved by advocating and providing opportunities for women centering around education, health and community throughout every phase of a woman’s life.

Implementation

  • 2 Tournaments were conducted:
    • The Beechmont to Byron Bay Tournament
    • The Beechmont School Tournament (a one day event that mobilised school children).
  • Included the Dog Walking Strategy into the Tournaments, welcoming dogs onto walking teams and to walking groups.

Outcomes

  • 220 participants and their dogs participated.
  • New walking groups were formed whilst participating in the Tournaments, while existing groups have been strengthened.
“The 10,000 Steps program has inspired me to follow an exercise program on a daily basis. This program is very worthwhile to implement into any community.”
