Strategy: Community Tournament
Charters Towers Regional Council was one of nine 10,000 Steps Community Grant recipients awarded funding for the implementation of 10,000 Steps Community Strategies in 2017. The Charters Towers Regional Council plans to align a 4 week Time Out Tournament with their Towers Rush event, which is an all community inclusive event that focuses on getting out and active.
Background
Charters Towers Regional Council is a local government who wants to encourage physical activity for the community as a whole, whilst also aligning with the Towers Rush event, a family friendly 'Amazing Race' style event that requires participants to complete various activities/challenges, both physical and mental.
Implementation
- Conducted a 4 week Time Out Tournament.
- The Tournament was advertised and promoted on the Council website, the Council Facebook page, local newspaper, LED noticeboard and via posters and flyers.
- Participants were encouraged to do as many steps as possible to be in the running for additional prizes.
Outcomes
- 68 community members participated.
- The Tournament made participants more aware of the activity that is required to get their 10,000 Steps up each day.
- The Tournament encouraged family and friends to participate and continue their daily physical activity, with many teams enjoying themselves by wanting to walk more often as friendly rivalry between teams began.
